City of the Sun – Live at the Factory EP

MUSIC MONDAYS

BY CHRISTOPHER DORICK

LENGTH: 29:16
RELEASED: MARCH 18, 2014
GENRES: POST-ROCK, GYPSY JAZZ, FLAMENCO

Quick take: Three guys. Two acoustic guitars and a rhythm box. That’s all. No bass, no drums, certainly no lyrics, and all that is needed by this NYC trio to produce a sound that is so unique you’ll have these five tracks on repeat. Hypnotically beautiful, each track seems to start off slow and steadily crescendo into a luscious and powerful rhythm that, once reaching its crux, has a release that triumphantly fills the heart with pure bliss.

After sitting on this apex for just the right amount of time, it slowly decrescendos back into a place of comfort and familiarity, leaving the listener in a state of awe. As City of the Sun plows through half an hour of mesmerizing compositions, you can’t help but realize they are pulling at every conceivable heart-string. The passion that is emitted from this EP fills the gaps that a lot of today’s music leaves wide open, and as a result, is very worth the listen.

If you dig this EP, you have to see them live. They have a certain energy onstage that the album only partially conveys. October 21 in NYC at the Pier 16 Octoberfest… guarantee you they will not disappoint.
